Diet programs are advertised as being capable of magical transformation - often flying flat into the face of health advice. For example:

  • The faster you lose weight (through starvation or extreme exercise), the harder it is to keep it off. In other words, the faster you lose weight, the quicker you put it back on.

    How many diet programs tell you to "take it slow" and aim for 1 or 2 pounds a week? None.
  • It takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 pound of fat. Swimming, considered as one of the most effective exercises for losing weight, takes off about 400-600 calories per hour (depending on your intensity). Can you swim for 6 hours a day? And NOT eat either?

    Losing weight fast is dangerous for your body. However, the "quick fix" is a lot easier to sell to people.

The diet industry is making billions of dollars by misleading you. And with more and more Americans being overweight (and thus going on diets), the industry is thriving. This is all based on a myth - something I like to call the "Dieting Myth".

The Dieting MYTH

Dieting isn't about losing weight. In fact, any dieting program that you'll see in the weight loss industry is bound to make you do one thing and one thing only:

It will ask you to starve.

Dieting today, it seems, is all about starving yourself in order to lose weight. In terms of the cardinal equation of weight loss, dieting focuses ONLY on reducing the amount of calories you consume. The less calories you consume, the more weight you will lose.

Simple, right?

The truth is that dieting wreaks havoc on your metabolism, on your immune system and on your energy levels. When you starve yourself (i.e. when you start a typical diet), the following happens:

  • Your body starts to conserve energy and stores it as fat, so that you burn less calories and do NOT reduce the fat on your body.
  • Starving yourself means putting a huge strain on your body, leading you to reduced energy levels. You feel sluggish, sleepy and tired.
  • Your metabolism slows down, making it harder for your body to burn calories.
  • As your body is starved of essential nutrients, your immune system suffers, making you more susceptible to illnesses and allergies.

Worst of all, starving yourself is a short-term solution - you may lose a few pounds very quickly, but the moment you stop your "diet", you gain the weight back. And because your metabolism has slowed down already as a result of you starving yourself, you'll burn less calories than before…

Let's get one thing clear: I work out regularly - the whole "three times a week, intensive exercise coupled with short bursts of intense aerobic activity" routine - but I don't do it to "keep my weight down".

I DON'T exercise to keep my weight down. I like to keep fit - I'm probably one of those few people who enjoy exercise - but losing weight, or maintaining my current weight, has nothing to do with it.

Exercising - especially if you are working with weights - has several advantages:

  • You can "shape" your body to look attractive.
  • You build strength and endurance for sports.
  • Your energy levels shoot through the roof, allowing you to do a lot more during the day.
  • You speed up your metabolism,

Working out has two negative side-effects, however:

  • To maintain your exercise routine, you'll have to eat more than usual (to feed your body the energy it needs). This means that while you may tone your muscles, you might not necessarily lose "fat" unless you follow a high-precision diet and workout routine.
  • If you were ever to quit working out, you'll balloon - your body is used to eating more and it cannot immediately adjust to the sudden change of eating less.

However, the biggest argument against working out (for losing weight) is this:

You work out / exercise to stay fit - as such, speeding up your metabolism is only one effect of working out, and nowhere near as powerful an impact that you get by changing your eating habits.

To understand why exercise is NOT your ticket to permanent weight loss, let's look at how the human metabolism works.
